![]() The species that uses the resource most effectively will eliminate the other. So, two species that use the same limited resource cannot coexist at constant population levels. If one species has a slight advantage over the other, it will outcompete the other to the point of extinction. The competitive exclusion principle states that no two species can occupy the same niche in the same habitat. Interspecific competition happens when individuals of different species compete for resources. But when resources are scarce, territories need to be more extensive, leading to fewer territories and more competition between males. If there are plenty of resources, the territory size can be small, and more territories can fit in the area, leading to less competition. The habitat has limited space, so the size of the territory will depend on the resources available. For example, imagine a population of apes competing for territory that provides food and attracts new mates for them and their families. Different resources are linked, which affects competition. The carrying capacity the most significant population size that an environment can sustain with the available resources. When two members of the same species compete with each other, it's called intraspecific competition. This phenomenon is visualised in the following graph. ![]() So, the size of the population depends on how much competition there is for resources. when there are fewer resources or the population getting too big, there's more competition. The available in the habitat how there, is capacity more individuals, there's less competition. When members of the same species compete with each other, it's called intraspecific competition. Intraspecific competition Interspecific competition What is intraspecific competition? There are two kinds of competition in biology: competition and predation. Biotic factors are a part of ecosystems, which are made up of living things like animals and plants, and non-living things like water and rocks. These are biotic factors, which means they come from living things and can affect the size of a population. Predation is a kind of competition where a predator hunts and eats its prey. Students will read the informational text, answer 16 multiple choice questions and decode 4 types of puzzles which ultimately lead to a final 4-digit code.Competition when there isn't enough resources to go around and different organisms fight to get them. A friendly competition always increases engagement. Students will work in pairs (or individually) and race to complete 16 questions. To ensure understanding of the subject matter, students will answer questions that can be found directly in their reading passage. No prior knowledge is needed. Students will revisit the non-fiction text multiple times, practicing reading comprehension and critical thinking skills as they rotate around the room decoding puzzles.
